Summary: Ashwagandha majun is a sweet herbal paste combining ashwagandha with herbs like Shilajit and Safed Musli. It may support stress, sleep and stamina. Take 3-5 g twice daily after meals; consult a doctor first.
Quick answers
What it is: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a root used in Ayurveda, traditionally for stress balance, strength and vitality. Ashwagandha majun is a multi-herb paste in which it is one ingredient among several.
Label dose (Svarnsakti Herbal Majun): Half to one teaspoon (about 3 to 5 grams), twice a day, after meals with warm milk or water, or as directed by your Ayurvedic physician.
What research supports: Small to medium human trials of standardized ashwagandha extracts suggest benefits for perceived stress, sleep quality and strength. These trials did not test majun.
Main risks: Stomach upset, drowsiness, headache and, rarely, liver injury. Other herbs in a majun add their own cautions.
Avoid or ask a doctor first if: you are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive; are under 18; or have thyroid disease, an autoimmune condition, liver disease or a history of it, or take regular medicines.
What is ashwagandha used for?
Ashwagandha root has been used in Ayurveda for centuries. The name is commonly translated as "smell of the horse", referring to the root's strong odour and, traditionally, to the strength it is believed to give.
Today it is mainly used for:
- Helping the body cope with everyday stress
- Supporting restful sleep
- Supporting physical strength, recovery and stamina
- General vitality as part of a daily routine
Ashwagandha is often called an "adaptogen", meaning an herb said to help the body adapt to stress. This is a traditional and popular term rather than an approved medical category, and it does not promise results for any one person.
What is ashwagandha majun?
A majun (also spelled maajun) is a traditional semi-solid herbal preparation in which powdered herbs are blended into a sweet base to make a soft, spoonable paste. It is usually taken in small amounts after meals with warm milk or water.
An ashwagandha majun is a formula that includes ashwagandha as one of its herbs. Instead of relying on a single herb, it combines several traditionally used herbs in one routine. To see how a majun differs from a single ingredient such as resin, read our guide to majun with Shilajit and our overview of the key majun ingredients.
What does the research say?
Ashwagandha is one of the better-studied Ayurvedic herbs, but most trials are small and short, usually 8 to 12 weeks. Read the findings below as "promising", not "proven for everyone".
Stress and sleep
- In an 8-week placebo-controlled trial, adults taking 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily reported significant improvement in perceived stress (Chandrasekhar et al., 2012).
- In a 12-week trial in overweight or mildly obese adults aged 40 to 75, 200 mg of an extract twice daily was associated with a significant reduction in perceived stress (Smith et al., 2023).
- In an 84-day randomized trial of a 125 mg formulation, participants showed lower stress and better mood and sleep quality than at the start (Zenroot trial, 2025).
The type of extract, the dose and the individual all affect the outcome.
Strength, muscle and testosterone in men
Strength and muscle: In an 8-week trial of healthy young men doing resistance training, 600 mg a day of root extract was associated with greater gains in muscle strength and size than placebo (Wankhede et al., 2015). A 2026 meta-analysis of randomized trials found a moderate overall improvement in muscle strength. Ashwagandha works alongside training, food and rest. It does not replace them.
Testosterone: In an 8-week trial of overweight men aged 40 to 70, testosterone rose about 14.7% more in the ashwagandha group than with placebo (Lopresti et al., 2019). The 2026 meta-analysis also reported increases in healthy adults. The effect is modest, and ashwagandha is not a treatment for low testosterone. If you suspect a hormone problem, get tested.
Benefits for women
Women also use ashwagandha for stress, sleep and energy, but evidence is more limited than in men. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive should avoid it unless a doctor advises otherwise. Svarnsakti Herbal Majun is formulated for adult men.
Benefits for skin
Claims about healthier-looking skin are common, but good human evidence is thin. Any skin benefit is likely indirect, linked to better stress and sleep, so do not expect visible changes from a supplement alone.
अश्वगंधा के फायदे (Ashwagandha ke fayde)
Ashwagandha powder vs tablets vs majun
| Feature | Ashwagandha powder | Tablets / capsules | Ashwagandha majun |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form | Plain root powder | Extract or powder in a capsule | Herbal paste with several herbs |
| Taste | Bitter, earthy | Neutral | Sweet, easy to take |
| Herbs included | Ashwagandha only | Usually ashwagandha only | Multiple traditional herbs |
| How it is taken | Mixed into milk or water | Swallowed with water | A spoonful after meals with warm milk or water |
| Dose control | Easy to measure | Fixed, often standardized | Harder: ashwagandha is only part of each spoonful |
| Best for | People who want a single herb | People who want a fixed, standardized dose | People who prefer a traditional blended formula |
No format is automatically "best". Powder and capsules give you a single herb in a measurable amount. A majun gives you a combined formula, but you have less control over exactly how much ashwagandha is in each spoonful, and each added herb brings its own cautions (see below).

How to use ashwagandha majun
As per the Svarnsakti label:
- Take half to one teaspoon (about 3 to 5 grams) per serving. A teaspoon of paste can vary in weight, so a level measuring spoon is more reliable.
- Take it twice a day.
- Take it after meals with warm milk or water, or as directed by your Ayurvedic physician.
- Use it regularly. Herbal products take time, and consistent use matters more than a bigger dose. Do not exceed the label dose.
- Store the jar in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
How long to use it: most ashwagandha trials last 8 to 12 weeks, and long-term safety data are limited. If you plan to take it for more than a few weeks, discuss duration and breaks with your doctor or Ayurvedic physician. For timing and routine tips, see our guide on how to take majun.
Side effects and safety
Many healthy adults tolerate ashwagandha well over short periods, but it is not risk-free.
Common side effects of ashwagandha
- Stomach upset, loose stools or nausea
- Drowsiness
- Headache
These are reported more often at higher doses. If they occur, stop and consult a doctor.
A majun adds other herbs, and other risks
Ashwagandha is only one of eight herbs in this formula. A multi-herb paste does not cancel out ashwagandha's side effects. It adds the cautions of every herb it contains:
| Herb | Caution |
|---|---|
| Kaunch Beej | Naturally contains L-DOPA. It may interact with Parkinson's medicines, MAO inhibitors and antipsychotics, and may cause nausea or affect blood pressure. |
| Jaiphal (nutmeg) | Safe in cooking amounts but can cause nausea, dizziness and confusion in large amounts. Do not exceed the label dose. |
| Shilajit | Should be purified. Unprocessed shilajit can carry heavy metals or microbes. People with iron-storage disorders such as haemochromatosis, or with low blood pressure, should ask a doctor first. |
| Dalchini | Cassia-type cinnamon contains coumarin, which can strain the liver at high, long-term intake. |
| Gokshura, Safed Musli, Shatavari | May affect blood sugar, blood pressure or hormone-sensitive conditions in some people. |
Majuns are also traditionally made in a sweet base. Check the label for the base ingredient (for example sugar, honey or jaggery) and the full composition, which matters if you manage diabetes or have an allergy.
Who should avoid taking ashwagandha majun?
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women, or anyone trying to conceive
- People under 18
- People suffering from liver disease or a history of liver problems
- People with thyroid conditions, because ashwagandha can raise thyroid hormone levels
- People with autoimmune conditions or on immunosuppressants
- People with hormone-sensitive conditions, such as prostate cancer, because ashwagandha may raise testosterone
- Anyone taking sedatives, thyroid medicines, blood-pressure medicines, diabetes medicines, Parkinson's medicines or antipsychotics
- People scheduled for surgery. Stop as your surgeon advises, commonly at least two weeks before.
If you take any regular medicine, check with your doctor before adding a herbal formula.
How to choose a genuine ashwagandha majun
Use this checklist rather than trusting ads alone:
- Complete ingredient list: every herb named, with the amount per serving or per 100 g
- Licence you can verify: Ayush License and manufacturing licence number you can confirm with the state licensing authority, plus a GMP certificate
- Batch-specific lab report: especially for heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium) and microbes
- Realistic claims: be cautious of "cures", "overnight results", "100% safe" or "no side effects". No herbal product is risk-free.
- Clear directions and precautions: dose, who should avoid it and when to stop
- Verifiable reviews: detailed, dated reviews rather than one-line praise
Is ashwagandha a homeopathic medicine?
Ashwagandha is mainly an Ayurvedic herb. Homeopathic preparations made from it exist, but they are very different from Ayurvedic powders, tablets and majun. Svarnsakti Herbal Majun is an Ayurvedic-style formula, not a homeopathic one.
Price
Ashwagandha prices vary by form, brand and pack size. Plain powder is usually the cheapest, branded capsules cost more, and multi-herb formulas cost more again because they contain several ingredients.
Svarnsakti Herbal Majun is listed at ₹999 for a 250 g pack, with Cash on Delivery available. At the label dose of about 6 to 10 grams a day, one pack lasts roughly 25 to 40 days, or about ₹25 to ₹40 per day. Please check the product page for the updated offer.
Final thoughts
Ashwagandha has deep roots in traditional use, and trials of standardized extracts show encouraging results for stress, sleep and strength. It works best alongside good food, regular exercise and enough sleep. A majun is one way to take ashwagandha together with other traditional herbs, but it has less precise dosing than a standardized extract, and every added herb brings its own cautions.
If you want a traditional blended formula, consider Svarnsakti Herbal Majun: eight herbs including ashwagandha, in a 250 g pack. Whichever product you choose, read the full label and consult a physician first if you have a health condition or take medicines.
